Vostok 1 12 April 1961 Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space; one orbit lasting 108 minutes. Gagarin never flew again, and died in a jet training accident in 1968.
Vostok 2 6 August 1961 Gherman Titov orbited 17 times in 1 day 1º hours. He has never flown since.
Vostok 3 11 August 1962 Andriyan Nikalayev completed 64 orbits in 3 days 22 hours. He came within 7º km
(4Ω miles) of Vostok 4 (not a true rendezvous) in the first two-man mission.
Nikalayev commanded the 17-day 17-hour Soyuz 9 flight in 1970.
Vostok 4 12 August 1962 Pavel Popovich in joint flight with Vostok 3; 48 orbits in 2 days 23 hours.
Popovich commanded Soyuz 14 in 1973.
Vostok 5 14 June 1963 Valeri Bykovsky in duel flight with Vostok 6 completed 81 orbits in 4 days 23 hours.
Vostok 6 16 June 1963 Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space and came within 5 km (3 miles) of Vostok 5.
She completed 48 orbits in 2 days 23 hours. She married cosmonaut Nikalayev, but never flew again.
